About reading practice on Games4English

Reading is one of the four English skills on Games4English, together with listening, speaking and writing. This page is the starting point for reading practice: choose the group you are learning or teaching, then spin a wheel to get a reading activity.

The pupils page offers a guided reading story. The adult learners page has a larger wheel of 13 reading activities, including stories and interactive games, so there is something different to open each time you spin.

The activities themselves are hosted on other websites and open from the wheel.

Choose your practice page

Reading is one of the fastest ways to grow your English vocabulary. The free reading games on this page ask you to read short passages carefully, find synonyms, recognise missing words and understand how words relate to each other.

Learn by reading and playing

Each activity turns a short text into a small challenge. You read, think, and respond within a limited time, which trains you to understand English at a steady pace instead of translating every word.

Tips for better comprehension

Read the whole passage once before you start. Notice the topic of each paragraph, guess unknown words from context, and replay the game to see how much you remember. For more variety, try vocabulary games or practise writing the new words you meet.
